Older workers are invaluable to sales
Dear Sir As a new subscriber to The Grocer, and a new business in the recruitment sector, I found your “Salary Survey 2007” article very interesting and relevant. One of the key questions it raised was “What explains the shortage of good candidates?” At www.maturesalesandmarketing.com we have a belief, based on our experience that too many recruiters focus on finding or placing candidates under a certain age. This excludes a huge talent bank of experienced sales and marketing practitioners who can fill vacancies immediately and hit the ground running (also solving another of the fmcg expressed frustrations of time taken to recruit). Furthermore, if as your article suggests more of the large fmcg companies are reducing their training budgets they will need to fill vacancies with experienced candidates, and our belief that “experience + expertise = better value” was never more relevant than it is today! The “Mature” brand in the appointments sector was established in 2005 by experienced senior managers and executives who found that that having a good CV, being out of work AND being over a “certain” age was not a good combination. After nearly 3 years they have a database of over 2,000 experienced candidates on the books many of whom have discovered that if you fall off the corporate ladder in your 40’s let alone your 50’s it’s tough to get back on at the same level and for some to get back on at all. Despite ageism being alive and well in the UK recruitment industry, we have had great success in advertising over 275 jobs in various sectors in the UK and overseas, This confirms our belief that in every sector experience does count, and as we head into murky economic waters that remind us of the late eighties and early 1990s (some of us were selling in the eighties with high inflation and the credit squeeze and can even remember trading through Black Monday!), many businesses will need help from people that have seen it all before. Yours faithfully, Trevor Lane Managing Director

Mandatory Retirement Age
The Government has published the Employment Equality (Repeal of Retirement Age Provisions) Regulations on the 17 February 2011. These Regulations will take effect on 6 April 2011. The Regulations abolish the default retirement age of 65 and gives guidance as to the provision of employee benefits post 65. The abolition of the default retirement age will have a major impact on employment policies and practices in the UK. It is important for employers to consider what impact these Regulations will have on employment policies and procedures.
